SHARIF LIWARU

I was raised to be, and consider myself, a leader. I am a man of action, a worker and willing to serve. I am passionate about my people and my work for us through the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization established to educate through the teachings of Malcolm X’s legacy. I am told I convey my passion when I speak, without having to speak loudly. I speak honestly and with sincerity.

I have been married for over 17 years and my wife Gabrielle and I have 3 children. My oldest son is Parris, my youngest son is Zaiid and the youngest, my daughter, is Chéamera. Gabrielle is an acclaimed artist, teacher and activist, inspiring my continued work.

I hold positions in several other community organizations including secretary of the African Culture Connection, whose mission is to provide African culture and art experiences for the public to encourage the appreciation for the richness diversity brings to all and social action chair of Phi Beta Sigmas’s local Alumni chapter. I have a master’s degree in public administration at UNO with a focus in non profit management and a bachelor’s of arts in black studies.

Professionally, I worked for the YMCA and Boys Town before joining UNO in the Office of Student Organizations & Leadership Programs where I served for five years as the assistant director, advising over 115 clubs and organizations and facilitating campus wide cultural programming. For the past four years at UNO, I have been the Elementary Schools Director of the Attendance Collaborative, responsible for implementing attendance strategies through school and community partnerships.
