Nebraska Hall of Fame

Nebraska Hall of Fame
The bust of Malcolm X, the 27th member of Nebraska Hall of Fame, has been installed upon the limestone base with the official bronze plaque (created by artist Nathan Murray, a Nebraska resident) announcing his membership and contribution to society. After a 20-year journey and enduring the 5-year nomination cycle three times, the historic bust now sits on its pedestal in the Nebraska Capitol Rotunda’s courtyard galleries. The Hall of Fame is open to visitors during the Capitol’s regular pubic hours. The Malcolm X Memorial Foundation wants to thank all of the state residents who took the time out to write letters, show up in person to testify and implore national attention at this historic moment! We are grateful to finally see Malcolm X inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame on May 22, 2024.

Malcolm X

Human Rights Activist
Malcolm X (1925 – 1965) was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.

Malcolm X is a pivotal civil rights figure who encouraged empowerment and inspired pride in Black heritage.

After serving a prison sentence in 1952, he moved to Detroit, joined the Nation of Islam, and took the name Malcolm X.

In 1964, he left the Nation of Islam, journeyed to Mecca for pilgrimage, and received the new name El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.

He was assassinated in 1965 while speaking at an OAAU rally in Harlem. His autobiography was published after his death and translated into 30 different languages.

4MX GREENHOUSE

In collaboration with artist Jordan Weber, the 4MX Greenhouse was erected in the summer of 2018. It’s design is installed in memory of a shotgun-style home for the purpose of storing and growing produce with our Shabazz Community Garden. The front of the house has a porch attached with the intention of inviting the community to interact via programming throughout the year. Inside, the rear has an elevated stage to assist with staging during seasonal programming to include yoga sessions, meditation and workshops.

BETTY SHABAZZ COMMUNITY GARDEN

Located on the North East side of the Malcolm X Birthplace, the Shabazz Community Garden was relaunched in April 2018. With over 100 volunteers tending to the garden and assisting with its development monthly since April, the garden will also grow produce to be installed into the 4MX Greenhouse located on the main pavilion near the former address of Malcolm X.

We are currently seeking volunteers to join our family! If interested, reach out to us at garden@malcolmxfoundation.org for more details. Be sure to check our events page for details on how to join the garden committee and get involved!
